I LOVE ice cream floats. My family LOVES ice cream floats. Honestly, I think the whole world loves ice cream floats. No other ice cream float is more legendary than the A&W Root Beer Float. It’s a classic. One most of us have childhood memories attached to.
I remember going to drive in restaurants with my Mom and Dad when I was young. It was so different back in the day. You would drive in and park. The waitress would come to your car and take your order. They were called car-hops back then.
We would wait in eager anticipation until our food came to the car. They would set it on a tray that hung on the car window. I know right. It sounds so strange. I’m showing my age with this information. Hi, my name is Kim, and I’m old.
It’s all good. I have the best memories of those times. I remember waiting for that order to come to the car. As soon as you saw your waitress you checked her tray to see if it was your order. The excitement was palpable. Is it mine? Then she’d pass by to the next car.
As soon as you caught sight of her again you did the same routine, checking the tray to see if it was yours. When you were the lucky one you felt so special. My Dad would hand my Mom each item, and she’d pass the food to us kids. We’d all quietly pass the food around.
Then the drinks came. It was always Root Beer Floats all around. In frosty mugs. Oh man, those mugs were everything. I can still envision them, and feel how heavy they were, how cold the glass was. That first sip on a hot day, oh man, it was magic. Pure magic.
I wanted to be sure my family knows the joy of A&W Root Beer Floats. They remind me of my childhood and I wanted to share those memories with my family. So we always made a point of making floats every summer. As much as possible.
We swing by Meijer on a regular basis to stay stocked up on A&W Root Beer, among other things. It’s one of my favourite places to shop. We head over about once a week to load up a cart and every single time there is A&W Root Beer involved.
My adult daughter is an absolute fanatic about A&W Root Beer Floats. She loves the flavour and it’s such a great treat on a hot day. Especially after hours and hours in the heat at the barn riding and training the horses. A root beer float hits the spot after a long, hot day!
Over the years I’ve made so many versions of the classic A&W Root Beer Float. This variation is my favourite, next to the classic A&W Root Beer Float. It’s a mix of chocolate ice cream, hot fudge sauce and A&W Root Beer. It is E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G!!!

- 1 cup of hot fudge sauce, warm it slightly
- 8 giant scoops of ice cream
- 4 cans of A&W Root Beer, chilled
- Warm the hot fudge sauce slightly. You want it warm, but not hot. Use a spatular or butter knife to spread about half of it on the inside of the glasses randomly. Pour a little on the bottom of the glass, then just swipe it here and there on the inside. It looks nice and it adds extra chocolate flavour to the float.
- Place 2 scoops of chocolate ice cream in each glass. Pour the rest of the hot fudge sauce over top.
- Now pour the A&W Root Beer over top of each glass slowly. It will fizz up so don't overfill. Pour, wait a bit, pour more.
- Enjoy with a big old A&W Root Beer Float loving smile!
